Hi Jeremy,
I've struggled with the consumerism aspects of the holidays as well. There's a lot of peer pressure to conform to other people's traditions. You're taking the right approach in finding your own traditions that work for you. The people who care about you will adapt over time.

Merry Christmas! Also, say hi to your dad for me if you see him over the holidays.

The USB external drives not working actually makes a bit of sense, as Parallels tries to export all USB devices to the guest operating system. Accessing the drive from (effectively) two computers at the same time could definitely cause problems. Just the same, you suld probably report it to Parallels as a bug.

Get a Firewire enclosure for that drive and you should be able to use it the way you originally wanted. If you were also hoping to use that drive on other (USB only) computers, you can find enclosures that support both.

You're gonna find your Vista Beta 2 DVD won't work. I've tried it myself, the Parallels VM software does not support the ACPI BIOS as of yet. However, according to their website, they'll support ACPI once Micro$oft releases the final version of Vista.

I'm sorry you've been having problems with the external drive. I've been running an XP image off of an external FW800 drive (I've got the 17" MBP) and it's rock solid stable. In fact, I'm working on a paper for school on it now. Just in case you're wanting to look for another drive, it's a 250GB LaCie d2 Hard Drive Extreme.
